Case Study

DVD Valet

DVD Valet is a catalog-and-scan utility for tracking a DVD and Blu-ray library. The product centers on batch UPC scanning, a queued local library, and a simple workflow for keeping collection records dependable on-device.

Role Product direction, scanning workflow design, on-device utility framing
Focus UPC scanning, local queue management, library visibility
Outcome A focused app for cataloging and tracking physical media

The Challenge

Cataloging physical media is tedious when capture is slow, queues are unclear, and the product does not make it obvious what has already been scanned. The app needed to make that repetitive workflow simpler and more dependable.

The Approach

DVD Valet was built around a few practical interactions: scan UPCs in batches, save them locally, refresh the library queue, and keep the workflow usable even if camera access is denied or temporarily unavailable. The emphasis was on fast capture and clear local state.

What It Demonstrates

  • Designing a focused utility app around scanning and local record management
  • Keeping the workflow clear even in a narrow, repetitive use case
  • Building a practical product around dependable on-device behavior
